Dr. Poitras graduated with honors from the University of Maryland and received his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He then did his internship in Surgery at Dartmouth Medical Center in Hanover, NH. His dermatology residency was completed at the University of Minnesota.
Following residency he was the chief of the Dermatology service at the USAF Hospital Center at Scott AFB after which he entered private practice in the Washington, DC area. While practicing there he also served as the vice chairman of Dermatology at the Washington Hospital Center.
He has held teaching appointments at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and George Washington University Medical School in DC. He has lectured nationally and internationally on the use of lasers in dermatology and has special expertise in surgical dermatology including Mohs micrographic surgery for difficult skin cancers. Outside of the office he enjoys skiing, scuba diving and spending time with his kids.
