Two Surgeons, One Great Family

Fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon Juan-Carlos Martinez, MD, and his wife Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeon Mary Ellen Wechter, MD, MPH, share the spotlight in magazine article

A recent story published in Medical Professionals - Jacksonville and the Beaches, gave a glimpse into the lives and loves of husband and wife surgeons Drs. Juan-Carlos Martinez and Mary Ellen Wechter.

The two met in medical school at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and since then have gone on to build a beautiful family and thriving practices on a strong foundation of serving and caring for others.

On his journey to becoming a Mohs Surgeon for Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Martinez took an undergraduate introduction to art history class, which helped him discover the importance of the visual part of his brain.

He heard a surgeon from Duke give a lecture on Mohs Surgery, a medical field of study that is “totally visual, where a diagnosis is made on a slide,” the recent magazine article revealed. Following that lecture, Dr. Martinez knew that was what he wanted to do.

Mohs is a highly effective surgery that removes skin cancers by excising one layer of tissue at a time. After each layer is removed, it is examined under a microscope to determine if the tissue is clear of cancer and precisely maps any remaining cancer for excision. “I can visualize a cancer, cut it out with my hands… and fix it.”

This precise microscopic mapping technique enables Dr. Martinez and other Mohs Surgeons to spare as much healthy tissue as possible, which is particularly important in areas that are the most visible, including the face, neck and scalp.

The two doctors married when Dr. Wechter was still in residency. Today, she is a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon with North Florida Gynecology Specialists, LLC.

Dr. Martinez performed Mohs surgery and reconstruction at Mayo Clinic in Florida from 2008-2021. He also trained dermatology residents, presented at numerous national and international conferences, and reviewed Dermatology journals.

In 2021, he joined Advanced Dermatology and performs Mohs Surgery in offices in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, Orange Park and St. Augustine.
