Dr. Leah Cardwell is a board-certified Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist with expertise spanning general medical, cosmetic, and surgical dermatology. Passionate about helping patients achieve healthy, confident skin, Dr. Cardwell brings a comprehensive and compassionate approach to every aspect of dermatologic care.
A proud Detroit native, Dr. Cardwell earned her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C., where she developed an early interest in skin health disparities and inflammatory skin diseases. She went on to complete a Dermatology Research Fellowship at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During this time, she conducted influential research on topics such as medication adherence and the medical management of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
Following her fellowship, Dr. Cardwell completed her Dermatology Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she gained extensive experience in complex medical dermatology, skin surgery, and cosmetic procedures. She then pursued specialized training through a Dermatopathology Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she refined her diagnostic expertise in skin pathology.
Currently, Dr. Cardwell is completing a Hair Restoration Fellowship in Orlando, Florida, further expanding her skill set in the diagnosis and treatment of hair loss and scalp disorders, as well as advanced hair restoration techniques.
Throughout her training and career, Dr. Cardwell has remained deeply committed to clinical research, mentorship, and education. She has contributed extensively to the dermatology literature through numerous national and international publications and presentations, covering topics that include rosacea triggers such as alcohol and smoking, therapeutic options for adult acne, and innovations in inflammatory skin disease management.
Dr. Cardwell is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (FAAD) and an active member of several professional organizations dedicated to advancing dermatologic science and promoting diversity in medicine.
When she’s not caring for patients, Dr. Cardwell enjoys mentoring aspiring dermatologists, engaging in community outreach, and exploring new ways to integrate research, technology, and patient education into clinical practice.
